US Economy: Production rebounds, housing languishes

Production jumped twice as much as forecast in July, signaling manufacturing is shouldering a US economic recovery that is showing signs of moderating in the second half of the year. Output climbed 1 per cent as factories churned out more computers, appliances, automobiles and industrial machinery, the Federal Reserve said today in Washington. Another report showed work began last month on fewer houses than forecast. Increased business investment is propelling the gains in manufacturing, which accounts for 11 per cent of the world's largest economy. At the same time, a slowdown in consumer spending will reduce the need to rebuild inventories, while cooling growth overseas may limit exports, meaning the pace of expansion will probably slacken. Advertisement: Story continues below "This is encouraging," said Lou Crandall, chief economist at Jersey City, New Jersey-based Wrightson ICAP LLC, who correctly forecast the jump in output. "This is a welcome interruption in the softening trend of economic data. Factory output is still growing solidly." Exceeds Forecast The median forecast of 74 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News called for a 0.5 per cent gain in industrial production. Estimates ranged from no change to an increase of 1.2 per cent. Output fell 0.1 per cent in June, revised from a previously reported 0.1 per cent increase. Factory output, which makes up 75 per cent of all production, rose 1.1 per cent last month after falling 0.5 per cent in June. Utility output increased 0.1 per cent after a 2.3 per cent jump the prior month. Mining production, which includes oil drilling, rose 0.9 per cent. Manufacturing got a boost from auto making as fewer factories shut for mid-year retooling. Output of motor vehicles and parts surged 9.9 per cent in July after falling 2.5 per cent a month earlier. Rosetta Stone Portuguese Excluding autos and parts, manufacturing still increased 0.6 per cent after declining 0.3 per cent. "We're seeing decent growth in manufacturing but anticipate that the pace will gradually slow down as we move forward," said Kevin Logan, chief US economist at HSBC Securities USA Inc. in New York. "We'll continue to have positive economic growth. It'll be a modest recovery." 'Unusual Uncertainty' Cisco Systems Inc., the world's largest maker of networking equipment, last week forecast first-quarter sales that missed analysts' estimates. Chief Executive Officer John Chambers said the San Jose, California-based company was seeing "unusual uncertainty" and getting "mixed signals" about the health of the economy. Housing is among areas showing scant signs of rebounding. Work began on 546,000 houses at an annual rate last month, fewer than the 560,000 median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News and up 1.7 per cent from June, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. Building permits dropped 3.1 per cent to a 565,000 pace. Builders are struggling to drum up demand following the end of a government tax break, for which buyers had to sign purchase agreements by April 30 in order to qualify for up to $8,000, even as mortgage rates drop to record lows. No Rebound "The tax credit brought forward some demand, and now we're in the middle of the payback," said Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts, who forecast a 545,000 pace for starts. "We're in a deep hole right now.

Tens Of Thousands Still Missing After Japan Earthquake Tsunami

It's hard to reconcile the terrible images with the serene coastline we knew. As the distressing - frankly unbelievable - images of the devastated city of Sendai flooded in last Friday, my thoughts were cast back to just a month ago. It was the last couple of days of a five-week family holiday that took us to the US and then on to Japan. Making every moment count, we ran our boys (Steve, 20, and Ben, 18) into the ground. So much so, that my wife Josie and I were forced to cast off our tour-guide alter egos in favour of a more relaxed, family-friendly approach. Fewer forced marches and museums, more holiday. It was this rejuvenated little group that flew into Narita for the second half of our one big overseas trip together. Advertisement: Story continues below While perhaps not the most beautiful of the world's cities, it's hard to beat the drive, pace and excitement of Tokyo, and so our commitment to slowing down was always going to be difficult to realise. Staying at the Shinjuku Prince, a 25-storey landmark hotel in the heart of the busy nightlife district, put paid to any suggestion of a quieter time. And so it was, for the next two weeks, frenetic sightseeing, eating and shopping. Shibuya, Harajuku, the Ginza, Akihabara - in every district something to marvel at, every area teeming with people. Our last such excursion, on Monday, February 14, was to Matsushima Bay. One of the ''Three Views of Japan'' - each known for its serenity and beauty - it's a magnificent body of water upon which some 260 tiny islands covered in pine trees appear to float. Matsushima is directly east of Sendai - a 40-minute train ride through a flat, densely populated landscape. A series of hills surrounds the bay and its township of tourist shops, temples and restaurants. Think Apollo Bay. We decided to take a tour of the islands, but there was an hour's Rosetta Stone German wait. Directly across the road from the ferry terminal was a restaurant. We ventured in to find a dining room divided into Western-style tables to the left, tatami mats to the right. Three groups of locals were seated Western-style. There were more tables there, but, much to the alarm of the boys, and the amusement of the sushi-chef, we removed our shoes and sat in the traditional manner, on the floor. The cultural tables were turned. Ben is 193 centimetres tall. Steve, 191. Legs went everywhere, backs and necks craned, elbows bore inordinate weight and feet grew numb. But we ate, and it was delicious. I made eye-contact occasionally through the meal with the chef. We shared knowing grins. His was, ''I can't believe you're putting yourself through that''. Mine was pretty much, ''I know, I know''. As the meal progressed, more kitchen staff arrived behind the counter, and a lively commentary ensued. While we were obviously the topic du jour, it was nonetheless a lovely moment - one of our happiest meals together. I don't understand how it is, but Japanese can rise from a tatami mat and don shoes with the grace of a ballet troupe. We, however, must have looked more like a rugby scrum, and as we walked over to pay the bill, everyone in the place was smiling. A small woman, the proprietor, came over, beaming. With, first, a customary bow, she extended her hand and took mine. Talking all the time, she then turned to Ben and lifted her hand as high as it would go (around his shoulders). Her eyebrows raised in mock horror - it wasn't hard to guess what she was saying. We responded with awkwardly demonstrative gestures, agreeing that, yes, he is tall isn't he. We shared no language, but there was such warmth and understanding and enjoyment. And where are they now? One can cling to some hope that those hills behind the town afforded these lovely people some safety, somewhere to retreat quickly. The meal we had in Matsushima had remained with us as one of those stories you trot out at dinner parties. How ungainly and inelegant we had been. How funny they found us.

Sound Off! -- March 8, 2011

No truth to the rumours There seems to be word going around that if you don't use your turn signal, your car will be worth more when you trade it in! This is a fallacy, so use your turning signals. They work good and I think you will like them. Time to bury the bigotry I find the sentiment behind the Sound Off, "Speaking The Language," cause for concern. How on earth can an immigrant child be expected to learn English at home when their parents don't speak it? The young children pick it up far quicker than their parents and are then able to go home and teach the rest of the family. Immigrant children growing up in Brandon are our responsibility. All of us. If more ESL teachers are needed, then it's up to us to provide it. Remember the phrase "It takes a village ... "? Can we please step up to the challenge and bury the bigotry? We have an amazing thing happening in our city. Take the opportunity to learn something new, grow in your experiences and share what you have to offer. (Hint -- that means volunteer!) We should have a National DNA Registry I think that all DNA should be taken and registered after birth. A police officer told me that this would certainly make their job much, much easier, but he fears that with all of the human rights legislation that they would oppose this. Politicians, let's get a backbone for a change and start proposing these things. It's hard work -- that's Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin) why In response to James O'Connor's column in Saturday's paper. For every scene of the bloody harpooning or the dragging of a whale up the ramp on our TVs, why have they not paid for 15-second grabs, immediately following, featuring two or three of the appalling scenes described by Mirko Bagaric ("Not having a whale of a time behind the farm fence", February 21)? Pretty soon we'd be eating a lot more whale meat, or we'd all be vegetarians. Alan Cook Merewether It is impossible to disagree with Mirko Bagaric when he condemns human cruelty to animals by asserting: ''Suffering is suffering. It is always ugly. It is always unwelcome. It always needs to be stopped. There are no exceptions. A person with the capacity but not the inclination to cease suffering is morally incomplete.'' But isn't this the same Mirko Bagaric who has argued for exceptions to the prohibition against torturing humans: ''The belief that torture is always wrong is, however, misguided and symptomatic of the alarmist and reflexive responses typically emanating from social commentators'' (''The 'yes' case can outweigh the 'no''', May 17, 2005). If there is no logical basis for ranking animal pain lower than its human equivalent, inflicting pain on humans is equally illogical. Best Paris English-language bookshops

Stephen Phelan enters a world of ideas in the English-language bookshops of Paris. No tourist can walk in Paris without feeling a little haunted. It is the same in all the old European cities, where millions of souls made their lives before the New World was ever heard of. However, it is stronger here because of the monuments and gargoyles, the Haussmann apartment blocks laid out like so many rows of grand tombstones, the endless list of the famous dead who did or said or wrote great things in the windows you pass beneath. Book lovers might be especially sensitive to this, treading over the bones of resident literary giants such as Zola and Balzac, or in the footsteps of such visiting lights as Dante, Dostoevsky and Ernest Hemingway. Advertisement: Story continues below On this bright, cold morning in Paris, the sky is blue, the Seine is gold and my cheeks are pink as I set out to spend a weekend browsing the city's English-language bookshops. Some of these are so long-established that this barely counts as shopping at all, more a form of historical tourism. Even the newer shops are part of a much older tradition and merely walking through the door is another way to enter the spirit of the place. Shakespeare and Company "We seem to exist in our own special bubble," the manager of the most famous independent bookshop in the world, Sylvia Whitman, says. This is her polite way of saying the declining power of the printed word in the digital age has not affected the foot traffic through the shop opened by her father, George, 60 years ago. Whitman leads me on a winding upward tour, from the wishing well on the ground floor to the reading room and writer's studio off the back staircase. Every surface along the way is so obscured by books that the teetering stacks might be load-bearing walls. "We're not as organised as we could be," she says, "but a lot more than we used to be." Through the painted windows, I see tourists flooding across the bridge from Notre Dame cathedral. Whitman says many will come looking for a copy of Rosetta StoneVictor Hugo's classic novel about the hunchback, which remains the shop's No.1 seller. Well-read backpackers will also go out of their way to see the beds that American beat poets once slept on, or under, as George's guests in the 1950s. And today a crowd of students and elder bohemians have gathered in the library for a convivial exchange of ideas at the weekly "tea party". "This day will never come again," someone is saying. Someone else is playing a ragtime tune in the piano room. In his own apartment on the top floor, we find Sylvia's father, now 97, watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on a small television. I ask if he's enjoying the movie. "Not really," replies George Whitman, this living legend of the Paris literary scene. "I'm more of a book man." 37 Rue Bucherie, 75005; Metro St-Michel Notre-Dame; shakespeareandcompany. San Francisco Book Company A few streets away, on the quieter side of the Saint-Germain district, there's a newer shop full of second-hand books run by another American emigre named Jim Carroll. Having spent his adult life reading about Paris in the novels of Henry Miller, Carroll moved from San Francisco to open his own shop in 1997. "It is a magnificent city for books," he says. "But the business is ... tres difficile." With his shelves illuminated by sunlight and Mendelssohn playing in the background, it is hard not to take a romantic view of Carroll's workplace. "That's what everyone thinks," he says, "especially the young folks who come in asking me for work. "I tell them, 'I know all about your dreams but you can forget them right now."' By which he means that, even in Paris, there is not much life left in the book trade.

The six-speed manual gearbox is something of a conundrum

A four-speed automatic is also available, again beefed up for use with the Gen III. Drive has had a go in the SS manual, not for our usual lengthy road test period, but on a pre-release evaluation which was enough to get a grip on the character of the SS. Assume for a minute the rest of the Series II SS is the same as the VT, which it is apart from the addition of four-way power windows and standard traction control on models with automatic transmission. The six-speed manual gearbox is something of a conundrum. The shift quality is far better than the previously available five-speed, which had a long throw and a vague action. This one slots home more smartly, has a more positive feel to it, but to be fair it is probably no quicker to use. But as mentioned, fifth and sixth ratios are very tall. Even driving at 100kmh in top gear means there's only about rpm showing on the tachometer. Not even 5.7 litres of V8 have enough grunt to pull that sort of gearing, and you'll probably have noticed that the Gen III's peak torque comes well up in the rev range anyway. But - and this is a big but - driven in the lower gears and allowing revs to rise above 3000 rpm unleashes a torrent of acceleration. It's easy to get even the wide, 23545 tyres squealing in first, second and even third gears from take-off. In fourth or maybe fifth gear there's enough flexibility for easy overtaking, and the typical V8 engine note under full throttle has to be heard to be believed. The Gen III is far more willing to rev than the engine it replaces, which proves to be a big bonus in terms of refinement, because it remains smooth at the same time. Until we get an accurate fix on fuel consumption, it's worth noting that the official (and generally artificial) AS2877 figures show the manual Series II SS has a city cycle of 13L100km compared with the VT V8's 14L100km, while the Rosetta Stone Greek highway figures are 7.4 and 9.0 respectively. Taken at face value, you can at least expect the new, bigger engine to be more economical. Even a standard Executive Commodore is a stable, easy handling car with plenty of road holding. The SS's stiffened suspension and wider rubber go at least one step better. The steering is still vague and lacking in feel, but the power of the engine means there's always the impression the back end is having plenty to do with steering input anyway. The ride is firm, but not overly so, and the Commodore's independent rear suspension does a good job of keeping things glued to terra firma, even over bumpy surfaces. There's not a lot to write about the Commodore's interior which hasn't already been said. It's roomy, with a big boot and back seat passengers sit deep in comfortable seats. The SS has a fairly wild looking new seat fabric which, in hues of orange, matches the new tiger yellow and orange for loudness. All in all though, this is a muscle car of excellence, even if some drivers might be surprised that you have to work at extracting performance from the Gen III V8 rather than laying back and letting the torque do the talking. It's quicker and more sophisticated than the SS it replaces, and despite the fact Holden has had to look to America to get the job done, that's no bad thing. Nuts 'n' Bolts Price: $46,650 auto and manual Engine: 5.7-litre, OHV, 16-valve V8. 2kW at 5000 rpm and 6Nm at 00 rpm Transmission: Six-speed manual or four-speed automatic Steering: Rack and pinion, 3.0 turns lock-to-lock. Turning circle 11.0m Brakes: Ventilated discs front, discs rear.

We have a lot of programs on the go at the moment

That good, we suffered a little in engineering last year with the performance of the company but we are back with all guns blazing now, we have hired quite a number of people to work on various things and of course we have people coming off VEWM. But of course we also have the other domestic programs going. So the place is really buzzing along at the moment, it good. What is it about this car you like most? The thing I like most is the bodyshell, the stiffness of it. The fact we can move the frequency response up so far from 21 hertz to 31 hertz for torsion so the `car is more refined. From a design outcome point of view I feel pretty good about the front and rear suspensions. Not without cost, but then again we asked the guys to come up with something and they did. Im really getting around to the whole chassis package which is showing my past passions. In this program brakes were originally carry-over from the VZ. And it is no secret the pain we went through with VT-VZ with brake shudder and so on. And in that time the brake guys had been busily working away in the background, working on discs, working on the technology of discs, a new caliper and all that sort of stuff . And then they came along and said look we have this set-up and we can do it for $3-$4 million and not too much piece costs, and we went into bat and got it. It was a bad time actually because the investment was really starting to creep up, but we got it in. And I think the outcome was really good, because I like the brakes, I think they are really good. Later on the fit and finish ... Denny (Mooney) really had a big influence. Not that Peter (Hanenberger Mooney predecessor) didnt have a big influence. Peter loved the Audi interior and pushed it and pushed it, and that why the car is the way it is inside. But when Denny arrived Rosetta Stone Arabic and we had this corporate dimensional technical specification that had been developed, and Denny said we are going for it. We said hang on we have just tooled the door and tooled the fender and tooled this and that and we then had to rush around with the tool makers and see what we could do to achieve the spec without destroying everything. It cost us a few million bucks but the outcome was worthwhile. Did you have the right managing director at the right time? Hanenberger the visionary when the project was being created, Mooney the engineer when it had to be finalised and delivered. It probably right. We had the right guy in-place when we put a car up that was a totally independent clean sheet not depending on anything,. We had enough horsepower behind us to get it approved. The second half of the program I guess we had the right guy to drive some of the outcomes we have got with spec, but also have the relationship with some people we needed a really good relationship with. Does the successful completion of VE at least in an engineering sense do anything for the revival of the Torana project. That is, a compact rear-wheel drive architecture powered by four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines? Honestly, probably not. It is not on the menu at the moment. There was a brief rush when we did the show car and there was the vision of a 3 Series competitor. But I think quite frankly since the other stuff has come along it has diminished into the background and we havent pursued it. I dont think we have the resources to pursue it. Is there a possibility a Torana project would be made redundant anyway, that you may have to start downsizing future Commodore generations in response to circumstances such as fuel economy?

French connection will make Carter more mature: Henry

Photo: AP New Zealand coach Graham Henry said he expected to call upon a"more mature" Dan Carter when the outside-half returned to theinternational scene following a six-month stint with French clubPerpignan. The 26-year-old Carter, widely regarded as the world's leadingNo 10, will join the Top 14 side next week for a brief spell whichcould see him miss the All Blacks' next Tests, at home to Italy andFrance in June, although he should be available for the start ofNew Zealand's Tri-Nations title defence in July. "I think it will be stimulating for him," Henry told reportersat the squad's hotel here Sunday. "I think he'll grow from thatchallenge. Advertisement: Story continues below "When you go and play in a different country it's a personalchallenge rather than a rugby challenge," the former Wales coachadded. "I think he'll handle the rugby it's just whether he'll handleplaying in a different environment, a different language and so on.I'm sure he'll handle that as well. "I think he'll end up a more mature rugby player for thatexperience." Carter contributed 17 points to New Zealand's 32-6 thrashing ofEngland here Saturday, a win that, following victories this monthover Scotland, Ireland and Wales, meant they's completed a grandslam without conceding a try. Remarkably, given he averages points a game against Englandand his status as one of the world's leading goalkickers, Canada Goose Canada Cartermissed five of his 11 shots at the Twickenham posts. "I didn't kick well but thankfully the team were great and theresult didn't come down to kicking," said Carter, whose clever chipset up the second of full-back Mils Muliaina's two tries. This victory saw New Zealand round off with a record of 13wins from 15 Tests, the Tri-Nations title, the Bledisloe Cup and agrand slam. The world's number one ranked side had won everything availableto them this year although all that will never be enough for thoseAll Black fans desperate to see the team add to their lone, 1987World Cup title. When New Zealand became rugby union's first world champions 21years ago, they did so on home soil and their supporters will hopehistory can repeat itself when they stage the next edition in11. Henry, who together with coaching assistants Wayne Smith andSteve Hansen, was, to the fury of many fans, retained despite lastyear's World Cup quarter-final loss to France, was understandablyupbeat. "I think we're in good shape and there's one or two youngsters, who might be included next year. But I would imagine the core thatplayed last (Saturday) night would still be around in 11." Asked to "reflect" on this year's achievements, Henry said: "Ihad a very long reflection. It got duller as the night went on. Iwas pleased to wake up this morning still alive. "It's a special year, the players have created a legacy for the team."

Wallabies will be special: Chisholm

Supremely confident Wallabies lock Mark Chisholm has boldly proclaimed the Wallabies are on the brink of greatness. Despite four straight Tri-Nations losses for their worst streak in four years, Chisholm said Robbie Deans' team was building towards another desired golden era for Australian rugby. The 0cm Brumbies second-rower made his Test comeback in the disappointing 32-25 loss to South Africa in Perth and sincerely felt all the signs showed a huge turnaround was imminent. Advertisement: Story continues below "I got a great feel for the team and where it's at," he said ahead of Saturday night's clash with the Springboks in Brisbane. "On the field I felt the team is just inches away from firstly winning and secondly becoming something great. "We're certainly heading in that direction and it's only a matter of time before we achieve those steps to get there. "I can sense it." The Wallabies looked a team anything but close to greatness in the opening half an hour against the Springboks at Subiaco Oval where they fumbled and bumbled their way to a 22-3 deficit. But Chisholm drew plenty from the second-half rally when the home side scored three tries to one, including two in the last five minutes to add respectability to the scoreline. "Running around the field I found we're the fittest side out there, and sitting in the grandstand the last couple of weeks I certainly saw that as well, that Rosetta Stone Italian we're finishing over the top of teams," he said. "It's just minor adjustments in the first minutes that we're capable of that will give us a win. "When a team is hot they're hot, but defensively we were inept and this week we've nutted that out." The return of Berrick Barnes to inside centre is seen by both teams as a major boost to the Wallabies as he's their defensive backline linchpin. Two of the four Springbok tries came due to miscommunication between Matt Giteau and makeshift inside centre Adam Ashley-Cooper from set moves off scrums. Springboks assistant coach Dick Muir, like Chisholm, expects a far better Australian performance at Suncorp Stadium, where they are unbeaten against South Africa. "They are a side with a lot of talent and when they do put it together they are going to shock one or two sides," Muir said. Barnes promised the Wallabies would "play rugby" to overcome the Boks, preferring to use their running and passing game than attempting to win by outkicking Morne Steyn and Fourie du Preez. Not since the 2-1 series win over the British and Irish Lions in June-July have the world champions been challenged at the business end of a Test. They have comfortably disposed of both New Zealand and Australia, ranked No.2 and No.3 in the world, in two Tri-Nations matches each to be a mere bonus point from claiming the trophy. But Chisholm, who made his Test debut in 04, believes they would not be able to overcome the young Wallabies, with an average age of 23-and-a-half, if the score is tight with minutes to go. "The body language was a big thing out there (late in the game in Perth," he said. "If the match is in the balance then mentally and physically we can get over the top." If they do, Australia will deliver a cherished birthday present for coach Deans who turns 50 on Friday.

Essential Killing Movie review MIFF 11

Video settings Essential Killing - Trailer An arthouse film that's the action movie of the year. Screening at Melbourne International Film Festival 11. Video feedback Video settings The great Jerzy Skolimowski returns, with the action movie of the year. Essential Killing centres on an anonymous Muslim soldier played by a totally disciplined Vincent Gallo; captured by US forces, he escapes into a snowy wasteland, where he forced to rely on animal instincts to survive. As ever, Skolimowski shows total command of a very modern cinematic languagealternating between ragged tracking shots and rapidly-edited subjective close-ups, while wilfully undermining any straightforward symbolic interpretation (one distressing scene is shot from behind the wheels of a toppled bicycle). Advertisement: Story continues below The "political" subject matter is a red herring, or at least takes second place to a broader philosophical inquiry: what do we really know about this guy, and how far are we willing to place ourselves in his shoes? A dreadful suspense arises from the prospect that hell eventually do something unforgivable: Skolimowski keeps us guessing till the final shot. To check session times and purchase tickets head to the MIFF website. The Anglican Church is particularly and publicly torn on the issue. The diversity of membership of this worldwide church clearly makes Rosetta Stone Hindi communion on issues problematic. The American Episcopalian Church is more progressive. In August 03, the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire elected the gay priest, Gene Robinson, as a bishop. In December , lesbian Mary Glasspool was elected a suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of Los Angeles. Such developments took place against a background of trenchant opposition threatening the schism of Anglicanism. For example, in 1998 the prime decision making meeting, the Lambeth Conference, stressed the immorality of homosexuality. And the leadership of the Nigerian Synod, which has grown to be the second largest in the Anglican Communion after England, claimed in 03 that homosexuality is a ''perversion of human dignity'' The Nigerian Church is reflective of many African Synods. The Anglican Church thus exemplifies the issue of homosexuality is a fundamental concern of the church. Anglicanism includes Bible-centred members who consider homosexuality to be sinful and more pragmatic members who promote a dialogue of tolerance and will appoint clergy and bishops from the gay and lesbian community. So the while the biblical prohibitions appear pretty straightforward, progressive Christians can reinterpret the Bible to a more tolerant and modern stance. It is hard to change ethics etched in stone but some are trying. What do you think? Are those gay tolerant people stretching the language too much so that their beliefs are not biblical? Or are they merely trying to make sense of a contradictory document? Should atheists use the biblical injunctions against gays as a basis to condemn faith or should we support the work of those modernists whose interpretations make the bible more humane and human?

Heavy metal dinosaurs rock the kiddie crowd in Finland

Finnish children's heavy metal band Hevisaurus. The usual heavy metal fan may not be a five-year-old girl in pigtails, but she is typical of hardcore following of Hevisaurus, a metal band that has hooked the kiddie crowd in Finland. The group, which rocks on about homework and monsters, played its first gig, a charity event, only last September but its fan base of mainly five-to-seven-year-olds has grown rapidly. The band was born when a flash of lightning and witches' spells revealed, cracked and brought to life five metal dinosaur eggs buried deep in a mountain 65 million years ago - around the time most other dinosaurs became extinct. Advertisement: Story continues below Or so goes the "official" creation story of the long-haired reptiles in spiked bracelets and black leather billed as the world's only Jurassic metal band. In reality, the idea hatched in the mind of drummer Mirka Rantanen, 38, a veteran "headbanger" who has played with numerous bands including the Finnish power metal group Thunderstone. "For years and years you seriously try, and then you toss up this one crazy idea, and everyone gets excited," said a bemused Rantanen in an interview. It all started a few years ago when Rantanen attended a children's concert with his own kids, now five and 11. "What if I started making music for kids?" he thought. "What if it was heavy metal, since that's what I've been doing for 25 years?" Rantanen began writing lyrics and, with some friends from the metalhead circuit, began composing and recording. He also started envisioning the characters in the band. "I'm a kind of 1980s Rosetta Stone V3 relic. You could call me a dinosaur," said Rantanen, now better known as an Apatosaurus called Komppi Momppi. "Long-haired dinosaurs playing heavy metal - it started to sound like a really good idea." Sony Music agreed, and so have the Finnish children and parents who flock to sold-out concert halls and kept Hevisaurus' first album Jurahevin kuninkaat, or Kings of Jurassic Metal, on Finland's album chart for weeks. "It's the best because it's heavy," said five-year-old Rico, who attended a packed concert in the southern city of Haemeenlinna wearing a Hevisaurus sweater and hat, and waving a Hevisaurus flag made by his dad. His six-year-old cousin Iina listens to Hevisaurus daily. Her favourite is the group's vocalist Mr Hevisaurus, a meat-chomping descendant of Tyrannosaurus Rex, who "sings so well". The youngest fan at Haemeenlinna was a two-month-old baby who wore protective earmuffs and slept through the show which, like all of Hevisaurus' gigs, was played live at child-friendly decibel levels. Part of Hevisaurus' appeal is the popularity of metal music in Finland. The niche genre has gone mainstream here - even played in churches - notably since the Nordic country collected its only Eurovision Song Contest win in 06 with Lordi's monster heavy metal song Hard Rock Hallelujah. "Lordi brought heavy metal to living rooms. We brought it to children's rooms," said Rantanen, asking "is it this bleakness that we live in, this darkness" that attracts Finns to heavy metal? Hevisaurus' lyrics, however, are anything but bleak. They focus on adventure and fun. When homework and school get tiring, it is time to find excitement by calling up the moon, flying on a dragon's back or laughing with the "Rupu-Rupu" monster, who "smells like an unwashed potty".

During this process it ended up trapping debris such as seeds, leaves, feathers and insects. Through a process of natural polymerization of the original organic compounds the resin got buried and fossilized. What You Need To Know About Wedding Music

If you are planning a wedding in the near future, one of the most important things is going to be the music. Music adds a special touch to any wedding ceremony and you will want to make sure that you pick out great music and have it performed by great performers as well. When you are choosing and organizing music for your wedding, you will want to choose your songs first, and then you can work on finding the musicians and DJs to perform or play the music that you have selected for your wedding. Music Selection Before you start worrying about musicians and DJs, you will need to decide on the songs and styles of music that you want to be in your wedding. You should consider both wedding selections for your ceremony and for your wedding reception. When choosing music for your ceremony, you will want to consider what type of wedding ceremony you are having. If you have decided to have a traditional church wedding, you may want to keep your music more conservative and in line with a formal religious wedding. On the other hand, if you are having a wedding that is not held in a religious type of setting, you will be more free to choose music that is not as conservative. If your wedding is being held in a church and you want to use secular music, make sure that the officiating minister or priest will allow it during the ceremony. When choosing the actual songs that will be sung or played in your wedding, you will want to choose songs that have meaning to you and your fiance. Perhaps you and your fiance have a special song that is "your song". If so, you may want to include that song in your wedding. If you feel that the song is a bit too wild or contemporary for your wedding ceremony, then consider having it played or sung at the wedding reception, or you may even want to have it as the song for your very first dance. You will also want your wedding music to be unique, so steer clear of music that has been played at every other wedding you have attended. Musicians for your WeddingAnother important part of organizing the music for your wedding is choosing musicians to play the music you have chosen. If you have a family member who is an excellent musician, you may want to have them play a piece for your wedding ceremony, but be sure to steer clear of being talked into Rosetta Stone having your second cousin's daughter playing if you are not sure of her skills. If choosing a family member, make sure that you have heard them play and that they are qualified to play your wedding music or you may end up in a wedding day disaster. The musicians that you hire for your wedding may depend on what style of music you have chosen for your wedding. If you are going for a very classical style of music you may want to hire a string quartet or a brass or woodwind quintet. If you want your processional to have organ music, then you may need to hire an organist as well. You may also want to hire a pianist for your wedding, especially if you are having people sing in your wedding. If the wedding is an important part of your ceremony, make sure that you can have at least some of the musicians available at the wedding rehearsal to make sure that everything goes smoothly the next day.Choosing a DJMany people decide to choose a DJ for their wedding reception instead of live music because it is a great deal cheaper than hiring a full band and usually you can get a greater variety of music as well. There are many DJs to choose from for your wedding reception, but you want to make sure that you get the very best. When choosing a DJ you may want to check with friends and family who have had weddings recently and see if they have a recommendation. You can also check with a wedding planner or even with your reception hall to see if they have any DJs that they would recommend.Once you have a few names for consideration you will want to interview each of the DJs and ask to see video of any weddings they have done in the past. Make sure that you get along well and that the DJ is easy to work with and will take your suggestions. Other things to check into when hiring a DJ is the cost, making sure they will be dressed appropriately, and the amount of experience they have doing weddings. Remember that your wedding is your special day, and you want to make sure that everything goes well. Make sure that you pick the music you want for your wedding and find musicians and DJs that are experienced and professional.

Arranged Marriage...by dr commander selvam

Arranged MarriageThis kind of marriages need more help from Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar. Before arranging marriage the match making of horoscopes is a must. Now days the astrologers match the stars only. They do not match the horoscopes. According to the Vedas it is not a proper procedure. Arranged marriage is a marriage arranged by someone other than the couple getting wedded, curtailing or avoiding the process of courtship. Such marriages had deep roots in most of the families around the world. The arranged marriage is practiced widely in South Asia, and the Middle East to some extent. It should not be confused with the phenomenon of forced marriage. The match could be selected by parents, a matchmaking agent, matrimonial site, or a trusted third party. In many communities, priests or religious leaders as well as relatives or family friends play a major role in matchmaking. The pattern of arranged marriage can be employed for other reasons besides the formation of a promising new family unit. In such marriages, typically economic or legal reasons take precedence over the goal of selecting a well-matched couple. Though critics are not always specific, criticism of arranged marriage usually targets abuses such as forced marriage and child marriage. In a "forced marriage" the parents choose their son's or daughter's future spouse with no input from their son or daughter. This form of arranged marriage is rare in the modern Western world, but not quite as rare in some other parts of the world. Occasionally, even if the son or daughter disapproves of the choice, the marriage takes place regardless, overriding their objections. In some societies, in order to ensure cooperation the parents may threaten the child with punishment, or in rare cases, disinheritance and death. Motivating factors for such a marriage tend to be social or economic, i.e., the interests of the family or community goals served by the marriage are seen as paramount, and the preference of the individual is considered insignificant. In a "child marriage" children, or even infants, are married. The married children often live apart with their respective families until well after puberty. Child marriages are typically made for economic or political reasons. In rural India and several other countries, the requirement Rosetta Stone Language of providing a dowry for daughters is generally acknowledged to be a contributing factor to female infanticide. In East Africa a form of arranged marriage known as absuma is set up between cousins at birth. In a "shotgun wedding" the groom is forced to marry the bride due to unplanned pregnancy (or other reasons). It is given this colloquial name from the traditional method of force used: holding a shotgun to the groom's head until he is married. This can also be classified as a forced marriage. Although it is worth noting that the concept came about before the invention of the shotgun. Laws of Old Testament Israel said that if an unmarried couple engages in extramarital sex the female can force the man to marry her or pay a fine. A reason is never given in the text, but it is likely predicated on the text's specification that the woman was a virgin; no longer being a virgin, it would be difficult for her to find a marriage, and so her sexual partner must marry her to provide for her well-being. Alternatively, it could be based on family honor, i.e. it was shameful for her to have had relations without being married, and it would be all the more shameful if she had a child out of wedlock. The main variation in procedure between arranged marriages is in the nature and duration of the time from meeting to engagement. In an "introduction only" arranged marriage, the parents may only introduce their son or daughter to a potential spouse. The parents may briefly talk to the parents of the prospective spouse. From that point on, it is up to the children to manage the relationship and make a choice. There is no set time period. This is still common in the rural parts of North America, South America and especially in India. The same pattern also appears in Japan. This type of arranged marriage is very common in Iran also. This open-ended process takes considerably more courage on the part of the parents, as well as the prospective spouses, in comparison to a fixed time-limit arranged marriage. Women and men fear the stigma and emotional trauma of going through a courtship and then being rejected.A more moderate and flexible procedure known as a "modern arranged marriage" is gaining in popularity.

The range of insurance coverage

There is a catch amid the skyrocketing sales of travel insurance thanks to terrorism scares and hurricane warnings. In the event that you opt to cancel your trip since you got afraid with something you hear about, you cannot depend solely on these insurance policies for they are quite limited. Worried about subway bombings or liquid explosive plots? That probably won't be covered. Thinking a hurricane 1,000 miles away could hit your favorite beach? It probably isn't covered, either. Your insurance will not be able to address your fears toward airline strikes not enabling you to send your daughter off to college. What gets people hooked into buying a travel insurance plan is that it guarantees money return even for the non reimbursable aspects of a trip such as the airline ticket and hotel booking costs and more importantly, these plans assure financial help to cover the cost of food or hotel rooms when stranded. Any person abroad who requires medical evacuation and assistance can find this policy well suited to him. Many medical sites like clinics and hospitals abroad do not find foreigners' travel insurance valid, so it is important that people know this. But you can expect exclusions brimming in these programs. However, there is no coverage on disasters that boost policy sales. Several of these insurance policies offered in the market do not contain any form of coverage on terrorism, many buyers are forced to be mindful in selecting their insurance plan. Six policies listed by a single travel insurance firm contain terrorism insurance, for example. Eight percent of the generated income is derived from the comprehensive policies that don't have this. But the huge catch is that the terrorism threat must really happen before the travel insurance policy holders can get their scheduled Rosetta Stone outlet reimbursement, in the place that they're supposed to go to before their scheduled days of departure. There are no insurance cushions for your fears. It is obviously the fear of many people toward these things that fuel the immense sales of these policies but then a vast majority of these plans don't even give any assurances against these things. One more thing is that you can consider yourself out of luck, too, on stuff like terrorism as you did not grab hold of a policy within 15 days of when you booked the trip. Many insurance providers did provide coverage on meals and lodging for the policyholders stranded in London following the aircraft explosion plot that was foiled. If the plan did not really happen and you meant to withdraw, you cannot expect any pay. The cost of the trip and the level of protection dictate the price of the insurance policy. One can simply purchase a comprehensive policy with guarantees on various flight cancellations, ruts that get you in a stranded situation, insurance for any lost luggage, emergency medical and evacuation coverage but then you also have the choice of getting the coverage that you desire. Two travel insurance companies, cancel for any reason policies that reimburse 75 percent of a trip's cost if you decide not to go. These cost higher by 40 percent than the usual insurance packages. Compared to Sept 11, 2001, the sales of travel insurance has already grown twice due to the aggressive sales people that drove 17 million policies to be sold each year, as stated by the data released by the U.S.Travel Insurance Association. Most airlines, hotels or cruise liners normally rebook without additional pay and they also lift restrictions in the event of major disruptions. You can actually get relief even without insurance.

An American in Leipzig

I grew up in an upper middle-class family in a rich section of Connecticut called West Hartford in the U.S.A. West Hartford is very New England with big wooden Victorian houses, lots of diverse restaurants and culture. Things are well kept, clean and green. When I first arrived in Leipzig, Germany in 1996 it was dark and gray. All the buildings looked decrepit and run down. There were very few restaurants and places to hang out. I had no idea how anyone could live under such circumstances. I shared an apartment with my girlfriend, which was an unrenovated, pre-war working-class place with two very small rooms. It had a closet for a kitchen, coal heating, toilet in the stairwell and no bathroom. After having lived in a house all my life, I felt very closed in, but I was grateful that I had a chance to use coal for heating. It seemed historic to me. Each room had its own heater, which was made out of tile and stretched from floor to ceiling. Soon, I fell into a routine: First, I had to clean the heater and remove the ashes, then I had to fetch the coal from the basement, cut the wood, go outside and empty the ashes, light the kindling and wait till the coal was thoroughly burned that I could close the door the door of the heater so it could finally warm the room. I had to do this every 12 hours, or whenever I wanted to keep the apartment warm.Life revolved around the heaters. The toilet in winter was another story; I would run down the stairs, turn on an electric heater and close, run back up and wait 15 minutes before the I returned to use it. Once a week I would bathe at a friend's house. This was all foreign to me. And I liked it too. By mid-winter the novelty had worn off and I found that all I wanted was to turn a knob to have heat go on, and a large warm bathroom so I could shower in my own place Rosetta Stone Portuguese. How many Americans lived like this, I thought. This created more questions like: What was it like to live in the former GDR? Or in Nazi Germany? These were all easier to understand and answer for me after moving here. Living history-and they were still changing times, 6 years after the fall of the wall.I made friends very easily. I think mainly because I was American and people were curious about America and why I came. They were very eager to show me their lives, how they lived and how they had lived. We had long discussions about how things were, about the change from socialism to capitalism and what was good and bad about it. I learned more about life in the former East Germany by talking and seeing than from any book I had ever read. There was also a little bit of a culture shock: I couldn't find a decent hamburger and there were no bagels. The bread was dry and hard and everyone smeared butter on their sandwiches. What a horrible combination: cheese with butter on a slice of Mischbrot - which is bread made from a combination of black bread and white bread and is very dense. In contrast, there was also this white toast bread which resembled American bread, but was dry and tasteless. This white toast bread was served with everything: Bockwurst with white toast bread, bratwurst with white toast bread, toasted white toast bread with ham and pineapples, the list goes on. So for an American, the idea of not being able to have a hamburger and a decent sandwich, or bagel was appalling. I looked everywhere! - To make matters worse, there was no coffee-to-go! I think I got coffee-to-go once then and it was served in a wax cup with the wax floating on top. I really had to change my idea of life. After almost seven years, I eventually got settled and used to the culture. I found bread I liked and the East German Doppelbrotchen which is a type of bread roll are delicious-especially when smeared with butter. The pastries were also pretty good. I got addicted to liverwurst and Doppelbrotchen, although I still hate Mischbrot. I have my choice of where I get my coffee, and bagels. The sandwiches are wonderful and served on wonderful hard chewy bread.
